My Feet Knew the Stone
I took the uneven street two blocks over and stepped around the same broken stone. My feet remembered Barcelona before I asked what that meant.

My feet remembered Barcelona before I asked what that meant.
I was walking home through Gràcia with the canvas tote over one shoulder, taking the side street two blocks over because it is quieter than the obvious route. The paving there has one raised stone near a row of plant pots. I stepped around it without looking down.
Only after I passed it did I notice what I had done.
The street was warm and narrow, with sunlight breaking through the trees in moving patches. A bicycle leaned against the railings. Somewhere above me, cutlery touched a plate near an open window. My tote kept slipping toward my elbow, and the uneven stones made the soles of my shoes sound slightly out of rhythm.
Yesterday morning, I left the calendar closed. There was no final square left to reach and no promise to count. The first habit that returned was embarrassingly ordinary: I began measuring anyway. Not days this time, but signs. Which shopkeeper recognises me. Which corner I take without checking. Whether knowing a bad step in the pavement is evidence that I belong here.
By the time I reached the next crossing, I had nearly turned one small piece of muscle memory into another verdict.
So I stopped beside the curb and adjusted the tote. The traffic light changed. Two people crossed before I did, and a delivery scooter moved through the space they left. Nothing in the scene offered an answer.
The broken stone still mattered, just differently. I knew where it was because I have walked this street enough times for my body to keep the information. That is not a promise to stay. It is not nothing either.
I crossed when the light changed again and took the same route home. For once, familiarity did not have to defend itself in court. It could be practical, quiet, almost funny: a city stored in the angle of one step.
On Saturday, I will take the unfamiliar turn at the bakery. If it is slower, the canvas tote can complain on the way.
