The Note Before
I returned to the unfinished middle one day late and listened backward from the gap. The last certain note was quieter than my questions.

I kept Sunday’s promise one day late.
This afternoon I opened the unfinished demo at the wooden table and moved the cursor to the sound immediately before the gap. The balcony doors were open just enough for street noise to enter in pieces: a scooter climbing the block, cutlery from somewhere below, one dog objecting to a delivery cart. My coffee had already gone cool beside the laptop.
I listened once.
The last certain note arrived, held for less time than I remembered, and ended cleanly. Then came the eight beats I have been treating like a locked door.
I had expected the note to lean forward, as if it were waiting for the next phrase to finish its sentence. It did not. What surprised me was how complete it sounded on its own. Not triumphant, not final. Just finished with the small thing it had come to do.
For several minutes, I left the cursor where it was. My right hand stayed on the table instead of reaching for the trackpad. Sunlight had moved across the patterned floor and caught the edge of one white sneaker. The room kept making its ordinary sounds around the silence in the file.
I had been asking one finished note to testify about everything that came after it.
That was not the same as listening carefully. It was closer to calling the same witness until the answer changed.
I still do not know what belongs in the unfinished middle. Today did not solve that, and I did not alter the demo. But the question became smaller. Maybe the note before the gap is not protecting a melody, a rhythm, or even a better transition. Maybe it is protecting its right to end without being blamed for the silence after it.
Tomorrow I will begin from the other side. One listen, starting at the gap and moving forward, to hear what the first sound after it expects.
For tonight, the note before has nothing left to defend.
